JB Substation Design

Services

Five services, one coordinated package.

Take a single service, or the whole electrical design package. The value is usually in the coordination between them — which is why design management is treated as an engineering service rather than an administrative one.

01

Primary design

The physical substation: how the plant is arranged, connected, earthed, labelled and specified.

  • Substation layouts
  • Substation elevations
  • Earthing layouts, above and below ground
  • HV plant above-ground earthing design
  • Substation interlocking diagrams
  • Busbar & connector layouts
  • Busbar & connector schedules
  • Busbar force calculations
  • HV plant label design
  • HV plant label schedules
  • Control room layouts & elevations
  • Control room earthing layouts
  • Control room cable containment
  • HV plant equipment specifications
  • Materials lists & BOQs
  • Review of existing utility drawings
  • Site obstruction reviews
02

Protection & control

The secondary system: how the substation is protected, controlled, supplied and wired.

  • Single line diagrams
  • Protection block diagrams
  • LVAC single line diagrams
  • LVAC loading calculations
  • 110V DC single line diagrams
  • 110V DC loading calculations
  • Multicore, communications & control circuit diagrams
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Cable block diagrams
  • Cable schedules
  • Core sheets
  • Materials lists & BOQs
03

Cable design

Getting the circuit from A to B: routed, rated, and installable without damaging the cable.

  • Cable route layouts and sections
  • Cable thermal rating calculations
  • Cable thrust force calculations
  • Cable pulling calculations
  • Winch location design
  • Joint bay layouts
  • Joint bay earthing layouts
  • Cable materials lists & BOQs
04

Design management

A substation design goes wrong in the gaps between disciplines far more often than inside any one of them. Design management is how those gaps get closed.

  • Design coordination across primary, P&C and cable
  • Scope management and change control
  • Technical interface management
  • Design reviews
  • Engineering delivery management
  • Coordination with civil and structural partners
  • Designer duties under CDM 2015
  • Designer’s Risk Assessments
05

Tender & procurement support

A design has to survive being priced and built by somebody else. This is the documentation that goes out to the market, and the technical answers that come back.

  • Technical scope of works
  • Tender drawings & schedules
  • Equipment specifications for enquiry
  • Technical input to Employer’s Requirements
  • Bills of quantity for tender
  • Technical query responses during tender
  • Technical evaluation of tender returns
  • Review of supplier technical submissions
  • Contractor technical queries during construction
  • Derogation & departure reviews

Standards

Designed to the standards the asset will be adopted under.

Whoever adopts the asset governs the arrangement, the equipment and the documentation format. That gets established at the start rather than reworked at submission.

Substation design produced to the standards of, among others:

  • National Grid
  • Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks
  • Northern Powergrid
  • Electricity North West
  • Energy Networks Association

Scope

What sits outside this.

JB is a specialist substation design consultancy, not a one-stop-shop. Being clear about the edges is more useful to you than claiming to cover everything.

  • Civil and structural design — delivered through trusted partners where required
  • Earthing studies — soil resistivity, earth potential rise, step and touch — delivered through trusted partners and coordinated into the earthing layouts
  • Protection settings and grading studies — a separate specialism, worked to rather than produced
  • Construction, installation and commissioning works
  • Supply or procurement of plant and materials — the specification and the tender documentation are produced, the buying is not
  • Acting as the ICP or holding the connection agreement
  • General building services and M&E design
