Not the usual FAQ. These are the questions that actually come up when someone is deciding whether a substation design consultancy is the right fit for their scheme.
At concept. The offer fixes the electrical boundary conditions; the design work is turning that into an arrangement that fits the site, meets the operator’s standards and can actually be built. That is usually a concept layout and single line diagram first, then feasibility against the site constraints before anything is detailed.
Yes — ICP design support is a large part of what this practice is for. Specialist substation design capability available per project, without carrying it as permanent overhead between schemes. The design is produced to the adopting operator’s standards from the start, in the documentation format their approval process expects, so it does not come back at submission.

More than the substation itself. A 132kV grid connection design starts from the connection offer and the point of connection, and has to resolve the arrangement, the plot, the plant, the protection scheme and the cable route between them — all to the standards of whoever is adopting the asset.
In practice that is a concept layout and single line diagram, feasibility against the real site constraints, then the detailed package: layouts and elevations, protection and control schematics, cable schedules and route sections, calculations and materials lists. Grid supply points, transformer compounds and both air-insulated and gas-insulated bays sit in this range.
Yes. BESS substation design covers the connection and switching substation for a battery storage site: the primary arrangement, the protection and control scheming, and the cable design between the containers, the transformers and the point of connection.
Storage sites tend to move quickly and change late, so the early concept work matters more than usual — plot size, transformer count and access decided at concept carry most of the eventual cost.
Yes — and the design is produced to them from the start rather than retrofitted at submission. Which operator is adopting the asset is one of the first things worth establishing, because it governs the arrangement, the equipment and the documentation format.
Yes. An independent review against the standards, the calculations and the rest of the set is often more useful than a rewrite — and considerably cheaper. The output is a comment register against the existing drawings, not a replacement package.
Not directly. JB is a specialist substation design consultancy, not a one-stop-shop. Where a project needs civil or structural design it is delivered through trusted partners and coordinated as part of the electrical package rather than left as a gap.
Yes. Primary, protection & control and cable design can each be taken on their own — plenty of work is a single discipline slotting into a wider team. The coordination between them is where most of the value sits, but it is not a condition of engagement.
Dates get agreed before anything is committed, not after. Work is taken on in the volume it can be delivered properly, so if a date cannot be met you will hear that at enquiry rather than discovering it at the point the drawings were due. A firm no on timing is more use to you than an optimistic yes.
Rarely too early. Decisions taken at concept — plot size, arrangement, transformer count, access — carry most of the eventual cost. A short piece of early input usually costs less than redesigning around a constraint discovered later.
